The Loaf Vegan Guide To Berwick & Borders: Places to Eat & Shop - vegan-friendly & eco-minded places in & around Berwick.
Published by Page Karen · 8 February 2015 at 04:00
Vegan-friendly, gluten-free, & eco-friendly places to eat & shop in & around Berwick, Northumberland & the Scottish Borders.
Please note, this list is not exhaustive. We'll keep updating as we receive new information. The current suggestions are based on personal or guests' positive experiences, but situations can change, so we always recommend checking before eating.
I've added some eco & recycling-minded places for shopping too, as although not vegan, our visitors often ask for such suggestons, & this keeps the info all in one place.

We recommend The Corner House Cafe, 31 Church Street. A lovely little independent cafe which offers a consistently good vegan soup daily, superb vegan coffee, smoothies & at least one choice of vegan cake! Added bonus is the cosy open fire & lots of books. We love this place, especially for their willingness to cater for vegans. Some gluten-free options too. Please support this fab little business!

The Granary Bistro, Dewar's Lane. Best vegan-friendly chips (& wedges) in Berwick (most of the chip shops still use lard/dripping.) Always willing to adapt items on the menu to a vegan version. Falafel, hummous, salads, mushroom panini the usual vegan options. No desserts as yet... Great vegan coffees. Varied programme of events & live music/open mic nights. Granary Gallery above. Free car park outside main entrance.

Sinners Cafe, Sidey Court, off the high street. Berwick's longest-running cafe offering vegan options. Independent. Classics such as aduki bean pie & vegan casserole. Desserts usually bought in, like LazyDay Foods biscuits. Good vegan iced coffee.

The Loovre, Ice Cream Parlour, Bank Hill, at the foot of Megs Mount (No 27 on tourist map) in former derelict public loo - now a beautiful little building! - offering spectacular views of the river & out to sea whilst you scoff your vegan icecream! Independent. We spoke to Dave when he set up this venture last year & asked if he'd stock a vegan option & he immediately responded with the delicious, & healthy!, vegan IceDelight, from Belhaven Fruit Farm. This stuff is pricey but heaven, & we really admire Dave's committment to reclaiming Berwick's old buildings & willingness to cater for vegans too - please support him if you can & enjoy a walk round the Walls with a vegan ice! If enough people ask, he's also said he'll offer a plant milk option for his teas & coffees too.

IceDelight - https://www.facebook.com/icedelight/timeline

High Street chains Caffe Nero & Costa Coffee, Marygate, are handy for the usual vegan options; Caffe Nero friendly & welcoming with good coffee, though charging the disappointing 'ethical-tax' as vegans know it - an extra 30p for having plant milk.

The Curfew - Micropub, 46a Bridge St. Through passageway next door to The Market Shop (not Shoe Lane.) Independent. Small bar & cosy courtyard. Regularly stocks vegan local beers from brilliant Spittal nano-brewery Bear Claw Brewery. Ask for other vegan drinks options.

Loads of vegan, Organic, environmentally-friendly, locally-produced & Fairtrade goods, gluten-free treats & staples, toiletries, cleaning products, foods, beers & wines. The Thomas and Ethel tearoom • gallery, High St, Earlston. Debbie Thomas, the owner, says "We always stock soya & rice milk at the cafe for drinks. We use coconut milk in our creamy soups. We offer gf options, gf oatcakes and buckwheat crackers. All our soups are vegan except ham and lentil and all homemade from scratch. We are looking to be contact suppliers for Just bread that is wheat, gluten, dairy and egg free (vegan certified) getting deliveries twice a week. We are looking to do a selection of vegan cakes also as we are getting more requests regarding allergies. My daughter (Tegan) is wheat intolerant and so am I. I have many other allergies/intolerences including dairy plus others and as a family we are aware how hard it is eating out. I have many vegan friends so good tasting vegetarian/vegan food just the norm. We are looking to put jacket potatoes and veg chilli on the menu and offer a selection of gluten free veg salads."
Sounds great, & Mike can vouch for excellent vegan coffee - do go support this fab new little cafe!
